HOW TO MAKE APPLE JUICE WITH AN ELECTRIC CENTRIFUGAL JUICER
SETTING UP YOUR ELECTRIC CENTRIFUGAL JUICER
The first step of the juicer set up is what I call the wipe down phase. Take a fresh cleaning cloth dipped in warm water and wipe down and clean the entire machine inside and out. Doing a total clean may require that you take some of the juicer components apart. The reason that I like to do a thorough cleaning before each juicer use is that the device is stored away in a cabinet unused for extended durations of time. I have learned the hard way that nothing will ruin a batch of fresh juice like the taste of dust.
The next step of your juicer set up regimen should include giving the device a full parts inspection before plugging it in. What I mean exactly is that you should make sure all of the parts are not only included in the setup, but that they are all properly arranged. If all of the required parts of the juicer are not properly installed it may cause damage to the machine. Always take the extra time to make sure that your juicer is set up properly. A thorough inspection can be completed quickly, then it's onward to the next step.
WASH AND RINSE YOUR APPLES
The second step in the apple juice production process entails washing and rinsing your ripe apples. First you'll want to set out a clean kitchen towel or large bowl to hold your washed produce. Next take each apple and remove the stem and any stickers that are stuck to the fruit's outer skin. Moving right along, next spray your apples with a plant derived organic fruit and vegetable wash and then rinse them off with cool tap water. Continue with this task until all of your fresh apples are thoroughly clean.
I highly recommend organic fruit and vegetable spray as it is a completely safe method of sterilizing the surface of any produce. I regularly spray it on apples, carrots, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, oranges, grapes, potatoes, and just about everything else. The formula only contains plant derivatives and citric acid, meaning it is safe for the family to use. Spraying and rinsing your produce will remove all harmful chemicals, pesticides, deadly soil-borne bacteria, insect and animal feces, dirt, wax, and heavy metals.
CUT YOUR APPLES INTO QUARTERS
For step three you will need to take out a sharp paring knife, preferably one with a corrosion resistant high carbon stainless steel blade. Next you'll want to cut your freshly cleaned apples into quarters. Each slice should be able to fit nicely into your juicer's entry spout. Once your apples have been quartered you will then want to remove the seeds and any other blemish on the fruit such as bruising. Once your apple slices are fully prepped you can then set them by your juicer for quick and easy processing.
It's very important that you cut out and discard the apple seeds before juicing the produce. Apple seeds contain trace amounts of cyanide which can be released into your beverage by the grinding juicer machine. Several apples worth of ground up apple seeds obviously isn't going to hurt you, however, some newly conducted research seems to indicate that it could still negatively affect your long term health. So while it will not hurt you to ingest trace amounts of cyanide, it's still a good idea to remove all the seeds.
FEED YOUR APPLE SLICES THROUGH THE JUICER
You're now at the fourth step, the juice extraction phase. Give your electric juicer a brief but thorough inspection before turning it on. Make sure that all of the components are exactly where they should be, especially the juice collection container. Next proceed to juice as many apples as is necessary to arrive at your desired juice volume. It should also be mentioned that I like to place a small metal mesh screen filter over my juice collection jar just to make sure that I get any apple pulp that may have slipped by.
When it comes to pressing fruits and vegetables through your juicer's feeder, there are two tips that you can benefit from. First off never force or vigorously press produce through the juicer's feeder as this can cause unnecessary damage or possibly even completely break the machine. The second tip is to always make sure that you are gently feeding at least medium to large size amounts of produce through the machine at once. Juicing medium to large size portions during each grind will maximize the liquid yield.
1 SMALL SIZE APPLE YIELDS UP TO 1/4 CUP OF JUICE
1 MEDIUM SIZE APPLE YIELDS UP TO 1/2 CUP OF JUICE
1 LARGE SIZE APPLE YIELDS UP TO 1 CUP OF JUICE
STIR AND SERVE YOUR FRESH HOMEMADE APPLE JUICE
We are now at the final step of how to make apple juice with an electric juicer. Once a suitable volume of fresh apple juice has drained into your collection vessel, it's time to turn your electric juicer off. Next you will want to take out a tablespoon and give the juice several stirs. It is very important to stir your apple juice after making it, that way the flavor and mouthfeel are consistent. The final part of this step is deciding whether or not to serve your delicious and tangy apple juice with cubed ice and a lime wedge.
In addition to just serving plain apple juice as I've outlined above, I thought that I should share some other helpful serving tips. The first tip is to serve your apple juice mixed with sun tea at a one to one ratio, and then strain the beverage over crushed ice. Another similar serving idea is to heat your apple juice with tea at a one to one ratio and then drink the combined mixture hot. The last serving tip that I'll share with you is to refrigerate your apple juice over night with citrus slices from a lemon, lime, or orange.
HOW TO STORE YOUR HOMEMADE APPLE JUICE
BOTTLED HOMEMADE APPLE JUICE WILL KEEP FOR 72 HOURS
One of the most recurrent inquiries we receive is how long will apple juice keep if it's stored in the refrigerator? The answer is that bottled and refrigerated apple juice will keep for up to 72 hours. It's strongly recommended that you store the beverage in a sealed juice bottle, that way it will not absorb flavors or scents from within your refrigerator. Not storing the juice in a sealed container also puts it at a risk of becoming contaminated with airborne bacteria. A lid will keep the flavor and freshness of your juice protected.
Other than storing your apple juice in a sealed bottle to help ensure freshness, you can also add one to two lemon slices to the juice. The citric acid will help keep the apple juice from oxidizing, thus guaranteeing a longer lasting freshness. When I make some apple juice I often store it in a sealed jar with two cinnamon sticks and several lemon slices. I usually let the mixture sit overnight, then the next day when I serve it I will pour the apple juice through a small drink strainer. This serving technique is my favorite.
FROZEN HOMEMADE APPLE JUICE WILL KEEP FOR 1 YEAR
The second most frequently asked question we receive is how long will frozen apple juice keep for? The answer is that frozen apple juice will keep for up to 1 year or more. In fact we've consumed frozen apple juice that was over 2 years old and it was totally fresh. We currently own 4 very large apple trees and have well over 2 decades experience in freezing juice. The more time that is taken to properly package frozen apple juice, the longer your juice will stay fresh. Frozen juice will spoil if not properly stored.
The process of freezing your apple juice is easy, with the end result depending on a couple factors. Always use quality plastic freezer jars. My freezer jar brand of choice is Ball brand as they seal well, never crack, and always keep your frozen goods fresh. Another priority when freezing your apple juice should be to properly seal your containers. Never rush through the process of sealing your freezer jars as the end result will be freezer burn and spoiled juice. Seal your apple juice properly for long lasting freshness.
CANNED HOMEMADE APPLE JUICE WILL KEEP FOR 1 YEAR
Another popular and efficient way of storing your excess homemade apple juice is to can it. The process is exactly like classic canning methods, only instead of canning actual apples you can the plain juice only. We have 4 apple trees and we usually can half of our juice and freeze the other half. There is a wide variety of ways to serve canned apple juice, including my favorite recipe which is to mix the juice with hot water like a tasty Polish fruit kompot. Canned homemade apple juice will keep for a year or longer.
It's important when canning juice to use quality canning jars. I buy Ball brand canning jars in bulk for all of my canned apple juice needs. Ball brand canning jars always seal well, they're extremely durable, and they keep canned juice and other foods fresh for years. The process of canning apple juice is very easy, simply pour your heated apple juice into washed and rinsed canning jars, then place each sealed jar into a hot water bath. With a little practice you'll become a homemade juice canning professional.
